The religious city of Panauti and Makar Mela ,is a book written both in Nepali and in English about change and continuity in a Nepalese historic city of the Banepa Valley. It is publised under the auspices of the Makar Mela 2022.45 years after the foundational study the author undertook with three French architects in Panauti city in 1976-79. The book deals with the tremendous changes that have affected this locality over the last decades: densification of the habitat, increase in the population, economic growth road development, extension of the new sopping centre situated at the entrance to the city, and deterioration of the surrounding environment. In addition, the population of this former authentic Newar city is increasingly becoming interethnic. The transformations are documented by a series of photographes taken by Prasant Shrestha, co-author of the booka and the author himself.
