Les éblouissantes photographies des États-Unis par Eliot Porter nous feraient presqu'oublier que l'âge d'or appartient au passé : elles peignent une nature aussi sauvage que celle à laquelle furent confrontés les premiers explorateurs. Les textes de Wallace et Page Stegner révèlent, en contrepoint, l'histoire des générations qui les suivirent : près de cinq siècle d'aventure entre une société naissante et un continent vierge. Ils dénoncent tous les problèmes qui se posent aujourd'hui du fait de l'exploitation incontrôlée des resources. Chacun des auteurs a choisi de privilégier les régions qui lui tiennent à cœur et, plutôt qu'un panorama exhaustif, ce livre offre une série de vues en profondeur illustrant des étapes différentes dans le processus d'adaptation réciproque entre la nature et l'homme américains.
Montrant à la fois le décor et son envers, cet ouvrage éclaire d'un jour nouveau ce continent mythiqe, superbe mais menacé, où, comme ailleurs, des milliers d'hommes tentent de redéfinir leurs liens à la terre.
