Abstract: |
In the valley of Kathmandu, to quote Perceval Landon," the continuity of life and faith has suffered from no religious intolerence for, strange though it may seem, Buddhism and Hinduism have here met and kissed each other. " The millennia-long commingling of these two religions in Nepal finds its most exquisite expression in that country's art. The unknown artists of Nepal have had an influence on the art of a large area of Asia far beyond what the tiny size of their country, hidden in the High Himalayas, would suggest.
In his catalogue raisonné of perhaps the finest Nepalese collection outside Nepal, Pratapaditya Pal documents this remarkable tradition. He begins with a substantial introdution that races the country's historical and cultural development. The catalogue itself is divided into three sections - sculptures, drawings from artists' model-books and priests' manuals, and paintings -each with a generous art historical introduction of its own. The works from the museum's sculpture collection, executed in stone, bronze, terra-cotta, and ivory, cover almost the entire historical period from A.D.300 to the nineteenth century. The painting collction is probably the most comprehensive of its kind in the world and includes outstanding examples of illustraated manuscripts, religious paintings on cloth, and didactic and narrative paintings on paper, dating from the eleventh through the nineteenth centuries. The most instructive single holding is a group of sketchbooks and drawings that were either kept in artists' families to be used as a model-books or served as priests' manuals. This is the most important assemblage of such material in any collection in the world. Dating from the fifteenth century, it is published here for the first time and will be invaluable to the students of both art and religion. Altogether, the catalogue contains detailed descriptions and illustrations of 71 sculptures, 39 paintings, and 31 books of sketches and drawings. All objects are generously illustrated, some in more than one view and with details, and 36 in color. In addition , there is an appendix devoted to most of the major inscriptions on the objects, a glossary of Sanskrit and Newari terms, and a comprehensive bibliography and index. Art of Nepal is the second volume in a projected series of catalogues raisonnés documenting the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art's holdings in the arts of India, Tibet,Nepal, and Southeast Asia. The series began with the publication of Art of Tibet in 1983. |
