La soixantaine fatiguée, Mr Beiji (Habib Boufares), jugé non productif, est licencié du chantier naval de Sète où il travaille comme ouvrier depuis plusieurs décennies. Ce père de famille divorcé aimerait, malgré les difficultés financières, préparer l'avenir de ses enfants. Son rêve : ouvrir un restaurant sur un vieux bateau qu'il a récupéré dans le port. Rym (Hafsia Hersi), la fille de sa nouvelle compagne, énergique et audacieuse, va l'aider à réaliser son projet. "La graine et le mulet" ne séduit pas immédiatement. Avant de dévoiler ses intentions, le cinéaste Abdellatif Kechiche, réalisateur de "La faute à Voltaire" et "L'esquive" (César du Meilleur Film 2003), prend le temps, de planter le décor, les personnages. Dans un joyeux chaos, le film égrène les séquences familiales chargées de tension et les échanges les plus banals. Si le rythme inégal et l'apparente confusion désorientent au départ, cette longue prise de contact va finir par payer. De familiers, les personnages deviennent attachants, et lorsque le film prend son envol, le suspense monte jusqu'à un final d'anthologie. Cette ode à la famille et à la solidarité, fable humaniste et généreuse, vogue entre Capra, Pialat et Sautet. L'émotion et la vérité crèvent l'écran. Peuplé de comédiens méconnus et formidables, ce miracle de cinéma a largement mérité ses récompenses. Il a remporté, entre autres, le Prix Spécial du jury à Venise 2007, le Prix Louis Delluc 2007 et quatre César en 2008 (Meilleur Film, Meilleur Scénario original, Meilleur Réalisateur et Meilleur Espoir féminin, pour Hafsia Hersi).
