Théodore Monod apprécie, en introduction, l'imagination avec laquelle son fils a réalisé cet ouvrage. Quelle brillante idée en effet non seulement de réunir ce journal que, dès l'âge de seize ans, le scientifique prit soin de rédiger au long de ses missions dans le Sahara ou en Afrique noire, mais aussi d'apposer à chaque paragraphe un titre qui en permet une lecture thématique ! Tout en conservant l'ordre chronologique des feuillets manuscrits, ce recueil livre les pensées les plus intimes de Théodore Monod sur sa première croisière océanographique, ses premiers pas dans le désert ou son service militaire. Les lettres, discours et entretiens, qui figurent en deuxième partie de l'ouvrage, complètent ce portrait d'un Monod méconnu : assailli de doutes mais aussi de colères et de fulgurants espoirs. Théodore Monod ne se considérait pas comme un écrivain. Néanmoins, plus que le recueil de ses découvertes scientifiques, ses livres (Méharées, Vie et Mort au désert...) témoignent d'une pensée et d'une spiritualité qui font de ce naturaliste et explorateur un grand humaniste de notre siècle. --Laure Anciel
