"Brigands gentilshommes", c'est ainsi qu'Alexandra David-Néel nomme les Khampa, ces nomades à l'inquiétante réputation de pillards qui sillonnent les terres sauvages entre Chine et Tibet. Elle les rencontre en 1920-1921 lors de sa tentative pour atteindre Lhassa, la ville interdite. Premier reporter féminin de notre siècle, elle voulait emprunter les sentiers inconnus, rencontrer les peuplades des immenses solitudes tibétaines, "explorer" leurs traditions, leurs croyance mystiques et magiques. "Quel dommage que la photographie ne rende pas ces couleurs si riches" écrivait-elle à l'époque.
Tiziana et Gianni Baldizzone ont fait ce voyage en liant constamment le passé et le présent, avec l'ambition de "donner de la couleur" aux impressions d'Alexandra David-Néel. Elle aurait aimé feuilleter cet album dont les admirables photographies nous offrent une vision éblouissante de la vie rude mais chaleureuse de ces contrées proches du toit du monde.
