Entre le Tibet bouddhiste et les plaines indo-népalaise dominées par l'hindouisme, les Magar du nord ont conservé une tradition chamanique remarquablement vivante et originale.Ces montagnards des ˂˂ collines ˃˃ du leurs gros villages autour d'une communauté de chamanes qui apparaît comme une société des héros. La complexité des cérémonies chamaniques peut être comprise à la lumière d'un autre domaine de la vie sociale, celui des mariages. Mais le rite ne met pas seulement en acte certaines relations formalisées par la règle d'alliance. Quand il entonne un chant, le chamane rend hommage à ses ancêstres en leur disant : ˂˂ Je suis né de vos danses, je suis né de vos jeux de tambours ˃˃. Doit-on mettre l'énigme de ce vers au compte d'un procédé poétique? Le rite crée un monde qu sein duquel acteurs et spectateurs tentent de maîtriser l'expérience quotidienne pour retarder la mort et engendrer plus de vie. Ce livre montre que les artifices rituels, censés produire des effets magiques, reposent sur une combination particulière entre des effets qui, eux, sont réels.
